This list contains a short selection of Estonian art songs of the 19th and 20th centuries. Singers are also free to choose other similar Estonian pieces not included in this list.<\/p>\n

Choosing an Estonian song in the 3rd round gives the singer the opportunity to compete for a special award.<\/p>\n

The selection below contains songs originally written for high or low voices. However, most of the songs are suitable for all voice types. Songs can also be transposed to an appropriate key if necessary.<\/p>\n

To make the choice easier, sheet music and sample recordings can be downloaded. No translations are available but the competition may help you with a particular translation if needed.<\/p>\n

Below, you can also find a simple guide to the pronunciation of Estonian.<\/p>\n

A simple guide to the pronunciation of the Estonian language<\/h3>\n

The general rule of pronouncing the Estonian language is quite simple – the letters are pronounced exactly as written. Only four vowels are complicated – \u00f5<\/strong>, \u00e4<\/strong>, \u00f6<\/strong>, and \u00fc<\/strong>, as they do not exist in many languages.<\/p>\n

The English speaker will find the sound \u00f6<\/strong> in the word girl<\/strong><\/em>. The pronunciation in Estonian would be written like “g\u00f6(r)l”, and the sound \u00e4<\/strong> in the word cat<\/em><\/strong> (“k\u00e4t”), but you will not find \u00f5<\/strong> or \u00fc<\/strong> anywhere in English. The French will find the pronunciation of \u00f6<\/strong> and \u00fc<\/strong> in the words s\u0153ur<\/em><\/strong> (“s\u00f6\u00f6r”) and une<\/em><\/strong> (“\u00fcn”), \u00e4<\/strong> is almost the sound in the name Seine<\/em><\/strong> (“s\u00e4\u00e4n”). German has the same sounds \u00f6<\/strong> and \u00fc<\/strong> as Estonian, but the pronunciation of German \u00e4<\/strong> is somewhere between Estonian e and \u00e4, and German does not have \u00f5<\/strong> at all. Russian does have \u00f5<\/strong> (= \u044b), but it lacks \u00f6, \u00fc, and \u00e4, whereas Finnish has all except \u00f5.<\/p>\n

Double vocals in Estonian spelling need to be pronounced just longer.
\nThe Estonian r<\/strong> must be pronounced with a rolling tongue like in Russian.<\/p>\n
